A Mesa man, David Cruz, has been sentenced to two terms of life in prison plus 30 years for sex crimes against an 8-year-old girl.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, in September 2023, the victim disclosed to her grandmother that Cruz had been touching her inappropriately for several months, and he told her not to tell. The little girl and her grandmother lived with Cruz at the time.

When interviewed by Mesa Police, Cruz admitted to several sexual acts occurring with the victim but tried to deflect blame onto the little girl.

During a bench trial, three separate confessions from Cruz were played, including a recorded jail call where he admitted to touching the victim. The girl also testified about the sexual abuse, which started when she was in second grade.

The judge found Cruz guilty of two counts of Molestation of a Child, a Class Two Felony and Dangerous Crime Against Children; and two counts of Sexual Conduct with a Minor, a Class Two Felony and Dangerous Crime Against Children.

“It takes unimaginable courage for a child to testify in court about such trauma,” said Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “Her strength not only helped bring a dangerous predator to justice but also sends a powerful message that victims will be heard and protected.”

  1. He should have been given a death sentence, we have more people than we need and he has proven he cannot function in society.

  2. A dirtbag like this should be out in the general population when some points at home and yells child molester. The other prisoners will make sure he will never be able to molest a child again
