Family Argument Turns Deadly In Phoenix

Phoenix Police detectives are investigating a shooting that left a man dead after an argument with his stepson.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on October 12, 2025, at approximately 7:35 p.m., officers responded to a shooting call at a home near 39th Avenue and Maryland Avenue. When officers arrived, they found and detained a man, 31-year-old Brandon Alvarez, who called 911 and told operators he shot his 57-year-old stepfather, Jaunarius Moreno. Officers cleared the home and found Moreno in the backyard, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The fire department responded and determined that Moreno died from his injuries on scene.

Homicide detectives believe that Alvarez and Moreno were in a verbal argument in the backyard when the argument escalated. Alvarez pulled out his firearm and shot Moreno, which resulted in his death.

Alvarez was later booked on one count of second-degree murder.
