Former Senate Majority Leader Janae Shamp, a registered nurse with extensive hands-on experience in healthcare, is introducing legislation to ban the use of fluoride in Arizona’s public water systems.
Shamp describes the bill as a “direct strike against government overreach” and believes it is a necessary step to ensure that Arizona’s drinking water remains clean, pure, and free from mandatory chemical additives.
SB 1019, sponsored by Senator Shamp, prohibits individuals and political subdivisions from adding fluoride or fluoride-containing compounds to public water systems in Arizona.
Senator Shamp introduced the bill in response to legal concerns surrounding fluoridation practices and the availability of voluntary fluoride products, which allow families to choose their desired level of fluoride exposure.
Growing concerns about the safety of fluoride have emerged, with studies suggesting that excessive exposure may be linked to lower IQ scores in children and potential risks to bone health, including an increased risk of fractures and uncertain connections to bone cancer.
“As a state senator and nurse, I cannot support fluoridation as a form of mass medication without informed consent,” said Shamp. “Unlike voluntary measures such as fluoride toothpaste or dental treatments, adding fluoride to our water forces every Arizonan—from infants to the elderly—to ingest a chemical they may not need or want. In a free society like ours, medical decisions should be personal, not mandated by the government. SB 1019 restores that freedom by banning the use of artificial fluoridation, allowing families to choose their own sources of fluoride if they wish. With similar legislation passing in Utah and Florida, it’s now time for Arizona to embrace medical liberty and protect our children’s health by ensuring that our drinking water remains free from unnecessary chemicals. Fluoridating water costs Arizona taxpayers millions each year in chemicals, equipment, and maintenance—funds that could be better spent on infrastructure or conservation in our arid state. With support from leaders like Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., we can establish a national standard for clean, unadulterated water. Together, we can remove these chemicals from our water and return control to the people, making Arizona fluoride-free.”

Spring water still is processed and chemicals added.
Reverse osmosis removes 99% contaminants but also removes essential minerals.
Fluoride is a treatment, not a pill that you can take. Children with growing teeth benefit the most and in the case of no fluoride added to their daily water intake are not able to choose. Benefits of fluoride have been proven over and over again for many years.
Example: Sulfur and chloride are as major essential minerals (where fluoride is not) that many people will say they are poisons.
The bill is designed to allow the user to choose not the government. I kind of stand by that philosophy, and I would find another source of fluoride if taken out of the tap water, but I can see poorer families not substituting due to their economics.
Yes, you can intake too much fluoride but how will that be measured if the consumer is self regulating their intake?
I’d like to see a lot more data on the alleged harmful effects of fluoride in water. Grandiose claims about potential horrible effects are not convincing. We’ve had 40 years of panic and lies about “climate change,” and the appalling tyranny and dishonesty about COVID. There’s also the fact that everything is politicized, huge amounts of money are usually involved, and people’s motives are suspect. We’ve had fluoride in water for decades and it seems to be great for dental health. Where are the monstrous side effects? I would like to see a lot more proof.
Long overdue. Unsure if it’ll go anywhere.
NEVER drink water with fluoride. Use reverse osmosis filtering, or buy spring water. Or move somewhere where the water isn’t poisoned by fluoride!
YES! About time!
