The Pima Community College men’s basketball team faced a tough test on Wednesday in its ACCAC conference game against Glendale Community College.
The No. 10 ranked Aztecs (10-0, 3-0 in ACCAC) and the Gauchos (10-3, 2-2) went back and forth having 16 lead changes and eight ties in the game as Pima picked up the 105-96 win, earning their 10th straight win to start the season.
The game was knotted at 49-49 at halftime. Sophomore Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) found his shot as he started the game 6 for 17 but closed it out hitting seven of his final eight shots.
The Aztecs struggled from the free throw line, but sophomore Taevean Famutimi-Brown hit four free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.
Hunt scored 22 of his team-high 29 points in the second half. He went 13 for 25 from the field and had five rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore Isaac Johnson shot 10 for 14 from the field and finished with 24 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds.
Sophomore Brock Mendoza added 18 points after going 7 for 8 from the field. He fell short of a double-double with nine rebounds and had four assists and three blocks.
Freshman Isaiah Hill (Tucson Premier Academy) flirted with a triple-double as he went for 12 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. He also had three steals.
Famutimi-Brown and sophomore Ky Green each scored eight points off the bench.
The Aztecs shot 58.3 percent from the field (42-72). They struggled from beyond the arc (5 for 20) and at the free throw line (16 for 32). Pima out-rebounded the Gauchos 38-27.
The Aztecs will be back on the road this Wednesday when they play at Scottsdale Community College in an ACCAC conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
