A man was arrested in Sierra Vista after barricading himself in a U-Hail truck.

According to the Sierra Vista Police Department, officers arrested an assault suspect after he barricaded himself in a U-Haul truck outside of Canyon Vista Medical Center on Friday, Jan. 9, at about 6:31 a.m.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of Fry Boulevard for a report of an assault incident. The victim reported that her friend had hit her in the head with keys, took the victim’s dog, and left. The suspect reportedly left the scene in a U-Haul truck, which was later located at a gas station in the 5000 block of E. Highway 90.

An SVPD officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield and led officers in a short pursuit ending in front of the Canyon Vista Medical Center (CVMC) main building at the 5700 block of E. Highway 90. The driver refused commands to exit the vehicle and could be seen acting violently towards the dog.

A perimeter was established around the vehicle and CVMC was placed on lockdown for the safety of staff and patients. SVPD and CCSO Special Response Teams responded, and law enforcement took the subject into custody with the use of non-lethal tools at about 7:55 a.m. The lockdown was then lifted, and animal control officers examined the dog before returning it to the victim.

The man was charged with assault, disorderly conduct, unlawful flight from law enforcement, animal cruelty, and resisting arrest, and was booked into the Cochise County Jail.
