The controversial former Arizona attorney general, Mark Brnovich, is dead at the age of 59.

His family announced his death on Tuesday afternoon:

“It is with profound sorrow that the Brnovich family announces the passing of Mark Brnovich. Best known as Arizona’s 26th Attorney General, a state and federal prosecutor, and champion of justice, he will forever be remembered and cherished by us as a beloved father, husband, son, and brother. We are heartbroken with this loss and are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support from so many wonderful people across the state and country.”

Brnovich leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

Despite his checkered service, elected officials, lobbyists, and pundits shared thoughts and prayers for the former attorney general and failed senatorial candidate across social media streams.

As previously reported by the Arizona Daily Independent, in October 2025 President Donald Trump withdrew the nomination of Brnovich to serve as US ambassador to Serbia. At the time, Brnovich, who often found himself at odds with the Republican base while in office, blamed the withdrawal on the “Deep State.”

Contrary to Brnovich’s baseless claim, it appears that his appointment was stalled largely due to opposition from forces in Trump’s “MAGA” orbit, who were strongly opposed to the controversial former AG.

Brnovich, who was twice elected Attorney General before seeing his personal ratings suffer and finishing a distant third in the 2022 GOP primary for US Senate, said at the time of the withdrawal “as the process dragged on, it became clear that the bureaucrats of the deep state do not want anyone with a political, ethical and religious background like mine to perform ambassador duties in Serbia,”  said Brnovich without evidence according to the Serbian Times.

However, Republican operatives who spoke to the Arizona Daily Independent on condition anonymity, say Brnovich met with strong opposition in Trump’s orbit “because of his political and unethical background.”
