Officials Warn Residents About Phishing Emails Impersonating Scottsdale Staff

malware

The city of Scottsdale is alerting residents to a phishing scam involving fraudulent emails that falsely appear to come from city staff.

These emails request payment and include links or attachments, such as fake invoices. The messages are being sent from email addresses that are not associated with the city of Scottsdale.

No city systems have been compromised. However, the use of the city’s name and branding may make the messages appear legitimate.

Residents should not click on any links, open attachments or submit payment in response to these emails.

The city offered these important reminders:

  • The city of Scottsdale does not request payment through unsolicited emails from individual staff members.
  • Legitimate city payments are processed through official city systems and secure webpages, not through direct email requests.
  • This phishing attempt is not related to the city’s new planning and permitting system. City staff will not email residents asking for payment through that system.
  • Only trust official city emails that come from addresses ending in @ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

The city’s technology and security teams are actively monitoring the situation and working with law enforcement partners to disrupt the scam.

How to protect yourself:

  • Check the sender’s email address carefully. Scam messages often come from external domains that do not end in a legitimate city address.
  • Do not click links or download attachments from unexpected messages.
  • When in doubt, go directly to the city’s official website or contact the city’s call center, at 480-312-5000.

If you believe you received a phishing email claiming to be from the city of Scottsdale, delete it immediately and report it to the city of Scottsdale through Constituent Services.
