Our 7th year, week 7
This was a very unusual and remarkable week. During all the years we have been watching legislative activity, we have never seen this level of frantic activity at this point in the session. Frantic activity and marathon, overnight sessions are nothing new toward the end of June when there is no budget and a government shutdown is looming, but never in February.
Activity was limited to hearings in House and Senate appropriations committees; and full chamber votes in COW and 3rd Readings. Next week should be more typical as we resume normal functions.
Most of the bills that saw action this week followed a familiar pattern. They dealt with subjects important to most citizens, and they passed with only Republican support. Some examples of such activity are reducing consumer prices, promoting education choice, and determining immigration status of aliens.
We are also seeing upticks in activity that normally happen this time of the year, namely strike everything amendments to bills and action by the governor on bills sent to her.
