Aztecs Earn All-American Honors at NJCAA Indoor Championships

The Pima Community College men’s track & field team competed at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships on Friday and Saturday at Washburn University in Topeka, KS.

The Aztecs finished tied for 24th place in the final team standings with a total of six points.

Sophomore Cedric Cade finished in sixth place in the Heptathlon with a total of 4522 points becoming a two-time NJCAA Indoors All-American. He took fourth place at last year’s Indoor National Championships.

Cade had two first place finishes in the Long Jump at 7.00 meters (22-feet, 11.75-inches) and a personal-record in the High Jump at 2.05 meters (6-8.75). He earned three team points.

Freshman Andrew Schmier (Red Mountain HS) also earned All-American stature in the Heptathlon as he took seventh place with a new PR of 4500 points. He was fourth in the Pole Vault with a vault of 3.60 meters (11-9.75) and fifth in the High Jump with a mark of 1.84 meters (6-0.50). His finish earned Pima two team points.

The 4×800 relay team of freshman Danny Knapp (Rio Rico HS), Eduardo Aviles (Vista Grande HS), sophomore Tayvien Biancuzzo (Mica Mountain HS) and freshman Noah Macias (Mica Mountain HS) broke the Pima school record with a time of 7:42.37 breaking the previous record held by Louis Madrigal-Diaz, Evan Rasoumoff, Caelan Pando and Wyatt Preble (7:50.86) set in 2024. Knapp, Aviles, Biancuzzo and Macias finished in eighth place and took home All-American recognition.

Other finishes at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships:

• Cedric Cade – Ninth place in High Jump (1.99 meters, 6-6.25); 21st place in Long Jump (6.82 meters, 22-4.50)
• James Jerusalem (Catalina HS) – Ninth place in Heptathlon 4439 points (PR)
• Jackson Koontz (Salpointe Catholic HS) – 11th place in 5,000 meters (14:57.50); 14th place in 3,000 meters (8:33.75 PR). He is No. 2 on the Pima all-time list in both events.
• Noah Brosier – 13th place in Long Jump (7.11 meters, 23-4).
• Jake Applegate, Gavin Anderson (McClintock HS), Makhi Prescott (Mica Mountain HS), Taylor Brown – 18th place in 4×400 relay (3:19.13)
• Marshall Knox (Verrado HS) – 18th place in Triple Jump (13.83 meters, 45-4.50).

The Aztecs will compete at the Cody McBride Multi’s and Invitational to start off the Outdoor Season on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 20-21 at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix.
