A woman and her newborn baby have died following a crash in north Phoenix late Saturday night.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, at around 11:32 p.m., officers responded to the area of Loop 101 and 19th Avenue regarding a collision. When officers arrived on the scene, they located an adult female passenger, Leila Kiani Potts, who was far along with her pregnancy in critical condition. The Phoenix Fire Department arrived on the scene and transported her to a nearby hospital.

Medical staff delivered the baby; however, both the mother and child were pronounced deceased. The adult male driver of the same vehicle was also transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle involved remained at the scene.

Detectives believe that the driver of the first vehicle failed to stop for a red traffic signal and collided with the second vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on Beardsley Road. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured. He was also evaluated for impairment; however, no signs of impairment were observed.
