The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (1-0) played its first regular season game on Tuesday at Eastern Arizona College.
The No. 3 ranked Aztecs (Division II) blanked the Gila Monsters (Division I) 2-0 in Thatcher.
The Aztecs scored a goal in each half as sophomore Leonel Gutierrez (Salpointe Catholic HS) put Pima on the scoreboard with his shot in the box with 7:50 left in the half.
Sophomore Darian Castillo (ASU Prep) set him up with the forward pass.
Pima added to their lead early in the second half when Castillo’s corner kick was headed into the goal by freshman Julius Loeffel with 43:15 left in the game.
Sophomore Tommaso Leonardi closed out the match with two saves. The Aztecs had four shots on goal as Eastern finished with two.
The Aztecs continue non-conference play on Saturday when they face-off against Yavapai College at Mountain Valley Park’s Amphitheater Fields in Prescott Valley. The teams are on the pitch at 4:30 p.m.
