Tucson – The Pima Community College volleyball team (4-4) earned a couple of statement wins against out of state teams on Saturday in the final day of the Aztec Classic held at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs evened up their record as freshman Victoria Page closed out the day with 20 kills while fellow freshman Skylar Westburg had a combined 19 kills in the two matches. Sophomores Alexandra Jacome (Canyon del Oro HS) and Breeze Schelter split the setting duties as Jacome posted 33 assists and seven aces while Schelter finished the day with 28 assists and four aces.
Pima CC Aztecs 3, Highland CC Cougars 0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-12): The Aztecs opened up their home schedule with a dominating win.
Pima held a 14-11 advantage and scored five straight points to go up 19-11. Westburg’s block capped off the run. Their lead never dwindled less than a five-point advantage as the Aztecs took a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) produced two straight kills to give the Aztecs a 10-7 lead in the second set as the Aztecs went on to score six of the next seven points to go up 14-8. Up 19-13, the Cougars chipped away with three straight points, but the Aztecs countered with three of their own to make it 22-16. Sophomore Addison Gilvin (Sahuarita HS) and freshman Estelle Fetsis (Pusch Ridge Christian) helped put the second game away as Pima went up 2-0.
The Aztecs took their first double digit lead of the match after Hutchens’ kill and freshman Alexis Ferbeyre’s (Pusch Ridge Christian) ace made it 15-5. They maintained at least an eight-point lead for the rest of the set. Page’s kill and Schelter’s ace contributed to the final points as the Aztecs earned the sweep.
Page finished the match with a team-high 11 kills. Westburg closed it out with eight kills, seven digs and two blocks while fellow freshman Amaris Biancuzzo (Mica Mountain HS) posted seven kills and three blocks. Jacome added 18 assists and three aces and Schelter had 14 assists and two aces. Ferbeyre finished with 12 digs.
Pima CC Aztecs 3, Northwest College Trappers 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-18): The Aztecs rode the momentum into their second match of the day as they went on to claim another straight set win.
The Aztecs took an early lead but the Trappers secured seven straight points to cut the deficit to 13-12. That is as close as they would get as Pima built their lead back to 16-12 as Biancuzzo capped off the run with an ace.
Fetsis added to the lead with a kill and an ace to make it 20-14. They built their lead back up to eight points and took the first set.
The Aztecs trailed 10-7 in the second set but scored four straight points to take the lead back. Gilvin’s block made it 11-10. Freshman Ansley Snyder (Canyon del Oro HS) had a kill that broke another tie as the Aztecs scored another four straight points to take the lead for good. Schelter’s ace made it 15-11. Westburg scored back-to-back points with a kill and a block to put the Aztecs up 2-0.
The Aztecs held off another rally by the Trappers in the third set as Northwest College made it 11-9, but the Aztecs scored four straight with Gilvin’s kill and block, along with Schelter’s ace to make it 15-9. Snyder, Page and Gilvin put down kills down the stretch to secure the win.
Westburg closed out the match with a team-high 11 kills while Page posted nine kills and three blocks. Hutchens also added nine kills. Freshman Leah Stoneking (Catalina Foothills HS) had four kills and 11 digs. Jacome fell short of a double-double with 15 assists, nine digs to go with four aces while Schelter finished with 14 assists, seven digs, two blocks and two aces.
The Aztecs will host their Alumni Match on Wednesday held at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. They open ACCAC conference play on Friday against South Mountain Community College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
