The Pima Community College men’s soccer team continued its strong run Saturday, while the women’s team saw its season-opening nine-game winning streak come to an end at the West Campus Aztec Field.
The No. 9-ranked Pima men earned their fifth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over Scottsdale Community College, giving the Aztecs wins in four of their last five matches.
Sophomore Leonel Gutierrez (Salpointe Catholic HS) provided all the offense for Pima, scoring both goals.
Gutierrez broke the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute when he drove a shot toward the net that was mishandled by Scottsdale. He struck again in the 55th minute, converting off an assist from sophomore Sean Ribadeneira (Pinnacle HS) to give Pima a 2-0 advantage.
The Aztecs controlled the match defensively, finishing with seven shots on goal while limiting the Artichokes (3-6, 3-4) to just one shot on target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tommaso Leonardi made one save to preserve the shutout.
Pima returns to the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday to face Mesa Community College. The match is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
Women’s winning streak ends with draw
The No. 7-ranked Pima women faced one of their toughest tests of the season Saturday, rallying from a first-half deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Scottsdale Community College.
The tie snapped the Aztecs’ nine-game winning streak to open the season.
Scottsdale (7-1-1, 6-0-1) took the lead in the 43rd minute when Brooklyn Nguyen scored off an assist from Quinn Fairchild, sending the Artichokes into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Pima responded in the second half.
Freshman Hazel Ramos (Cienega HS) drew a foul inside the penalty area and then stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick. Ramos converted in the 63rd minute to even the match at 1-1.
Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal the rest of the way.
Pima held a narrow 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, while freshman goalkeeper Vanessa Ceja recorded five saves for the Aztecs.
The Aztecs return home Tuesday to host Mesa Community College at the West Campus Aztec Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
