Democrat Nominee Caputi Busted For Fake Residency

Arizona law requires legislative candidates to live in the district they represent, and that law is the one that Democrat Tammy Caputi is breaking, according to a news story in the Arizona Republic.

Caputi and her family have lived in a large comfortable home in Legislative District 3, one of the states most upscale districts and also one of the most Republican districts in the state, making it a district where Caputi would have no chance of being elected to the legislature. According to the news report, Caputi moved into Legislative District 4, a competitive district where Democrats were looking for a nominee, and she filed to run for office one day after registering to vote there.  The problem for Caputi is that the law requires that she actually move into the district, and there is no evidence that she did so, and there may now be a mountain of evidence that Caputi’s residency is a fraud that doesn’t just violate the trust of voters, but breaks Arizona law and could get her kicked out of office if she managed to overcome the scandal and win.

Caputi has been deliberately vague as to why she would suddenly leave her husband and children and move a few miles over to satisfy her political ambitions, but there is no law against that, so long as she truly moved and begin to reside in the new district.  What made the move suspicious is that the Scottsdale condo she claimed to have moved into was owned by major donors to her campaign, who had each written her checks for the maximum allowed by law, over $10,000 in total.  Caputi might have gotten away with this reported scam if the owners of the condo had not then put the condo up for sale. Nothing in the listing suggested that there was a tenant, and the Arizona Republic story included pictures of what is clearly an empty apartment, with empty closets, a bare mattress propped against a wall in an empty room, even a kitchen counter with business cards on it from realtors.

Remarkably, even in the face of conclusive evidence that no one was living in the empty condo, Caputi doubled down on her claim in the story and insisted that she was currently living in that condo.

“It is a sort of fraud, and the victims are the voters in the district who are being asked to vote for someone who is lying to them every day about the most basic thing, and it is appalling.” commented one political observer, who pointed out that even if Caputi fooled enough voters into voting for her, she would likely get booted from the Legislature for breaking the law.  “The courts have made it clear that the Legislature also gets to enforce these laws, and there is no way for the Legislature to pretend that Caputi lives in LD4.  So the entire exercise becomes a waste of time for Caputi’s campaign.”

“It’s amazing how arrogant Caputi is towards the voters of our district,” said one voter, who was not at all pleased with the breaking news, “It takes a lot of hubris for Caputi to lie like this and think she can get away with it.”

For the moment, Caputi is quiet on the matter, but her website indicates she is still running for State House in District 4, where the empty condo is.  Her campaign theme remains “Leadership Arizona Can Trust”
