The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating a fatal vehicle collision that took the life of 26-year-old Michael Herrera on Tuesday morning on Tucson’s west side.
On September 12, 2017, just after 3:00 a.m., TPD officers and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the 1000 block of East River Road for a report of a single vehicle rollover collision. Citizens had located the flipped vehicle in the roadway and had removed the unresponsive Mr. Herrera. CPR was administered until Tucson Fire was on scene and able to take over medical treatment. Shortly after first responders arrived, Mr. Herrera was pronounced deceased on scene.
Detectives were able to determine that the driver was traveling eastbound on River Road at a high rate of speed. As he attempted to negotiate a bend in the roadway, he lost control of the vehicle and ended up in the westbound lanes of traffic where he hit the northern curb and a decorative wall. It is unknown at this time if impairments were a factor in the collision.
As detectives continued their investigation, they learned that the vehicle involved, a black Chevrolet Impala, had been stolen from a used car dealership a short time prior to the collision.
