Two suspects are in custody following an ambush shooting on Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) deputies and Prescott Valley Police Department (PVPD) officers early Sunday morning. Extensive investigative work has linked the weapons used in the ambush to a previous drive-by shooting in Castle Canyon Mesa on November 15th, as well as other incidents across Arizona.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, on November 23rd, deputies assisting PVPD near Carla Vista Drive came under fire from a truck occupied by suspects using a green laser. One round struck a YCSO deputy’s vehicle, narrowly missing the deputy. Deputies quickly located the suspect vehicle—a black 2021 Chevy Silverado—and detained the occupants.

Detectives from YCSO and PVPD, assisted by the ATF, confirmed that firearms seized from the truck matched the November 15th Castle Canyon Mesa shooting and other recent shootings in the area.

The suspects have been identified as 21-year-old Alex Heredia-Rivera and a 17-year-old male. Both were arrested on November 25th following the service of search warrants by YCSO and PVPD SWAT teams. The 17-year-old suspect is in the country illegally and currently has an ICE detainer placed on him.

“This case underscores the danger our first responders face every day. I greatly appreciate the men and women of YCSO and the PVPD for their vigilance in getting the violent criminals and criminal aliens off of our streets, keeping the citizens of Yavapai County safe. We must remain unwavering in the commitment to public safety,” said Sheriff Rhodes.

Both suspects face multiple felony charges, including Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, Discharging a Firearm at a Structure, and Weapons Misconduct. This case was a collaborative effort involving YCSO, PVPD, PANT, the ATF, and HSI.
