Aztec Basketball Teams Defeat South Mountain CC

Tucson –The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (21-0, 10-0 in ACCAC) faced its toughest challenge of the season on Wednesday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 5 ranked Aztecs survived a scare against South Mountain 51-50 as the final shot for the Cougars (17-4, 7-3) fell short and sophomore Taevean Fumutimi-Brown collected the rebound as time expired. For the second straight game, the Aztecs have scored their lowest point total of the season. They scored 69 points in the first half in Wednesday’s game at Chandler-gilbert Community.

The Aztecs took their first lead of the second half at 43-42 on sophomore Isaac Johnson’s alley-oop dunk that was set up by freshman Gerron Graham (Premier Prep Academy). It was Pima’s first lead of the game since it was 6-5 early in the first half.

The Cougars would take one more lead at 46-45 but sophomore Mason Hunt drained a three-pointer on the next possessions to stop any momentum.

The Aztecs trailed by as much as 11 points more than halfway through the first half.

The Aztecs trailed 32-23 at halftime and went on to outscore the Cougars 28-18 in the second half.

Johnson shot 10-for-11 from the field with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds

Hunt scored 14 of his 18 points in the second. He struggled from the field in the first half only going 1-for-7. The second half was a different story as he went 5-for-6 from the field. He also pulled down seven defense rebounds.

Graham closed out the game with 3 points, four rebounds, six assists, five steals and one block. Fellow freshman Isaiah Hill (Premier Prep Academy) had five points, three rebounds and three assists.

It was a tale of two halves as the Aztecs shot 33.3 percent (9-for-27) in the first half and 55.6 percent (10-for-18) in the second half.

South Mountain shot 40.6 percent (13-32) from the field in the first half but shot 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from downtown in the second half.

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (16-4, 8-2 in ACCAC) picked up its fourth straight win as it cruised at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 12 ranked Aztecs opened the first quarter on a 22-2 run and went on to beat South Mountain Community College by 82 points at 109-27.

The Cougars (3-13, 0-10) didn’t score their first points of the game until 53 seconds left the first quarter.

The Aztecs went on an 18-0 run in the second quarter to go up 46-6 as they took a 49-9 lead at halftime.

The Aztecs went on to outscore the Cougars 61-18 in the second half.

Sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller (Dream City Christian) posted her seventh double-double of the season finishing with a game-high 30 points on 14-for-19 shooting to go with 13 rebounds and four steals.

Sophomore Lucy Land made her presence felt off the bench as she scored 18 points on 9-for-10 shooting. She also had four rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Reigne Waugh flirted with a triple-double as she posted 12 points, 10 rebounds and six steals. She was 3-for-6 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

Freshman Nevaeh Urenda (Flowing Wells HS) contributed with 10 points, nine assists, seven steals and four rebounds off the bench.

Freshman Kahlia Gonzales (Mesquite HS) added nine points, eight assists and three steals while sophomore Cassie Coolidge (Sahuaro HS) shot 4-for-4 from the field and 1-for-1 from three-point range for nine points.
