Pima Community College’s nationally ranked soccer teams swept Paradise Valley Community College on Tuesday, with the women cruising to a 6-1 victory and the men using a second-half surge to earn a 3-0 shutout at West Campus Aztec Field.
No. 7 Pima women remain unbeaten
The No. 7-ranked Pima women continued their perfect start to the season, scoring three goals in each half to improve to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in ACCAC play.
Sophomore Gabriela Mendoza (Tucson Magnet HS) led the Aztecs with two goals and an assist, while sophomore Ava Dagnino (Salpointe Catholic HS) added two goals.
Dagnino opened the scoring in the 19th minute off an assist from sophomore Alyssa Allan. Just one minute later, freshman Hazel Ramos (Cienega HS) found the net off a Mendoza assist to make it 2-0.
Mendoza pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 40th minute, converting a pass from freshman Mandy Tran (Salpointe Catholic HS).
Pima picked up where it left off after halftime. Mendoza scored her second goal in the 61st minute off an assist from Zariyah Whitlock (Sahuaro HS), giving the Aztecs a 4-0 advantage.
Paradise Valley’s Zoe Girley scored in the 77th minute, snapping Pima’s streak of five consecutive shutouts. It was only the second goal the Aztecs have allowed this season and their first since Sept. 3.
Sophomore Kailyn O’Connell (Catalina Foothills HS) answered one minute later, and Dagnino capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the 80th minute.
Pima dominated the offensive chances, finishing with a 21-5 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Vanessa Ceja made four saves.
The Aztecs will face their toughest test in weeks Saturday when they host No. 15 Scottsdale Community College at 5:45 p.m.
No. 9 Pima men pull away in second half
The No. 9-ranked Pima men needed more time to find their offense Tuesday, but once they did, the Aztecs quickly put Paradise Valley away.
After managing just one shot on goal in the first half, Pima scored three times over the final 27 minutes to earn a 3-0 victory and improve to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in ACCAC play.
Freshman Jonathan Karumuna (Pinnacle HS) was involved in all three goals, finishing with a goal and two assists.
Karumuna set up sophomore Luis Lamadrid for the breakthrough goal in the 63rd minute.
He then found the back of the net himself in the 78th minute off an assist from sophomore Wei Wei Mannos (Pinnacle HS) to give Pima a 2-0 lead.
The two reversed roles just a minute later, with Karumuna assisting Mannos for the final goal of the night.
Pima’s defense did the rest, limiting Paradise Valley to two shots on goal as the Aztecs recorded their fourth shutout of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Tommaso Leonardi made two saves.
Pima finished with seven shots on goal, including six in the second half.
The Aztecs return home Saturday to host Scottsdale Community College at 8 p.m.
