On Wednesday, the Navajo Nation reported 6 new COVID19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and no recent deaths. The total number of deaths remains 494 as previously reported on Monday.

The Navajo Nation, unlike the State of Arizona, has routinely reported the number of recoveries.

According to the Nation, “Reports indicate that 7,347 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 92,751 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The total number of COVID-19 positive cases is 9,573.”

The Nation has been disproportionately hit by the pandemic. As a result, the sovereign nation also announced that there will be a 32-hour weekend lockdown beginning Saturday, Aug. 29, at 9:00 p.m. until Monday, Aug. 31 at 5:00 a.m.

“We have only six positive COVID-19 cases today, but that doesn’t mean we can be careless or start traveling. We have to remember that numbers are still relatively high in nearby towns and cities, so there is still substantial risk. Please keep wearing your mask, social distancing, washing your hands, staying home as much as possible, and avoid crowds. We do not want another spike and our health care system can’t handle another COVID-19 spike,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

On Tuesday, the state of New Mexico reported 69 new cases of COVID-19, Utah reported 403, and the state of Arizona reported 859 new cases.

“The Navajo people and all the frontline workers have done an outstanding job fighting this virus and I’m confident they will continue to do so. Please keep everyone, including the doctors, nurses, EMT’s, police officers, firefighters, and others in your prayers each day. Keep fighting hard and don’t give up. We’re doing a great job and we have to keep it and not let down,” said Vice President Myron Lizer.
