On Monday, Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended a woman convicted of trying to kill a New York City police officer in 1995. Clara Ines Garavito-Medina was arrested at approximately 6:30 p.m., after crossing into the U.S. illegally at County Road 18 near the San Luis, Arizona port of entry.

Garavito-Medina, age 61, of Columbia, has an extensive criminal background that she tried to conceal with 13 aliases, according to a records check conducted by Border Patrol agents.

On July 25, 1995, Garavito-Medina was a passenger in a vehicle when she attempted to shoot a New York City police officer, but her gun didn’t fire. She was convicted February 4, 1999, for attempted first-degree murder, second degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a loaded firearm. She served 18 years at the Albion Correctional Facility in Buffalo, New York.

Immigration judges first ordered Garavito-Medina’s removal from the United States in October 1991, and then again in October 2017 after her incarceration.
