Petersen named Maricopa County Assessor

Mesa resident Paul Petersen, who has worked more than seven years in the County Assessor’s office as the Assessor’s representative and PIO, has been named as the new Maricopa County Assessor. Petersen, a licensed attorney and court interpreter, replaces former Assessor Keith Russell, who resigned the position in June to become a Justice of the Peace in east Mesa.

Petersen, 38, was unanimously appointed today by the five-member Board of Supervisors and will face election in 2014 to serve the remaining years of Russell’s term. Russell was re-elected in November 2012 for a four-year term. Russell, who administered the oath of office to his successor, said: “I have confidence that Paul will utilize his experience and training to serve the public well.”

Petersen promised the board he would “work hard to continue what Keith (Russell) has done in bringing professionalism and effectiveness to a well run office.”

The supervisors noted Petersen’s experience in the Assessor’s office – and the challenges he faces. “You have a lot of work ahead of you,” commented Supervisor Denny Barney. Board members said they had several outstanding applicants for the position. “It’s never easy,” said Supervisor Steve Chucri. “But I am sure Paul will serve the constituents and residents well.”
