Jackals and jackasses

This week, we were witness to the animalistic behavior of those who were outraged over a vote by the Pima County Board of Supervisors declaring Pima County an immigrant friendly community. While many thoughtful people questioned the politically motivated and purely symbolic stunt by the Board, others lashed out against Board members in the ugliest fashion.

The unanimous vote on Tuesday simply and honestly declared Pima County an immigrant friendly community. Pima County is an immigrant friendly community. Pima County, for the most part, is a community of immigrants. Few of us are natives, and those of us who are, know that our community would not be the remarkable place it is without the immigrant.

The vote on the Resolution did not declare Pima County an illegal immigrant community – although, for the most part, it is. If you have been in the community for any length of time, you have worked or worshipped alongside someone, who has broken the law to escape the oppressive poverty in countries that reject free markets and equal access to opportunities.

No one condones crossing the border illegally. Few would welcome those who have violated our laws and the rights of those who have waited patiently to become part of American’s strong and beautiful fabric.

However, few would condone the actions of those who began abusing the supervisors. No doubt, the Pima County Board of Supervisors, for the most part, deserve our scorn. They have destroyed this community through their cronyism and complacency. We might be an immigrant friendly community, but we are also the 8th poorest community in the country thanks to the waste, fraud, and abuse by officials in Pima County and the City of Tucson.

People who wrap themselves in the flag and wear crosses around their necks immediately took to Facebook and telephones to condemn the individual supervisors. Those patriots and Christians acted in a way that was anything but patriotic or Christian. They condemned before they understood. The most vicious attacks seemed to come from immigrants. While those attacks may have been fueled, in part, by a resentment for those who jumped to the front of the line, there is no excuse for their vitriol.

The jackals’ feeding frenzy on the flesh of one particular supervisor was especially disturbing. That supervisor, Ally Miller, has never given anyone of her supporters any reason to think that she is not working on their behalf in their best interest. Yet, the animals pounced on their keyboards and their target. Of course, the Arizona Daily Star had whetted their appetite the day before with a misleading article about the supervisor’s agenda item and how those supervisors might vote.

The animals didn’t care how incredible the Star has become; they only heard the word ‘immigrant,’ and their hunger was stimulated.

These same people talk about traitors and building armies against the enemy with their “friends” on Facebook. What they don’t understand is that real the enemies to this country are the people who believe everything they read and act upon it.

Jackals and jackasses are destroying this community, not immigrants.
