South Tucson recall set, more could come

The reformers in South Tucson continue to come under attack. A recall election of Mayor Paul Diaz is currently set for May 19, 2015.

Last week, under the leadership of Diaz the City Council named an interim city manager and a new police chief.

Councilman Ildefonso Green, who is opposing Diaz’s reforms, is behind the recall of Diaz. Last week, during the Council meeting, Green left the Council chambers breaking the quorum. Green demanded that the recall be held in May, other Council members wanted it in August.

Green is now himself the subject of a recall petition.

Benny Young will serve as interim city manager. Young will be paid $20,000 for the six-month interim contract. Young is replacing reformer Luis Gonzales, who has had health problems the past year.

A lieutenant with the Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department, Michael Ford, will serve as the new police chief.
