Mom, Son Drown In Yuma Canal

On the afternoon of May 15, 2015, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Salinity Canal and County 11 ½ street in reference to a drowning of a 25 year old female and her 2 year old son.

Both victims have been confirmed to be Guatemalan Nationals.

Upon arrival of the scene, deputies were advised by U.S. Border Patrol agents that they had located the bodies in the Salinity Canal at approximately 10:00 p.m.

During the investigation, it was learned that U.S. Border Patrol agents had located shoe impressions leading west into the canal but did not locate any shoe impressions on the opposite side of the canal. Agents began to search the area and located a female and male body in the canal. The agents were able to recover both bodies and attempted to resuscitate them until Rural Metro arrived. Both victims were transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center where they were pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

The female victim was 25 years of age and the male victim was her 2 year old son. Both victims have been confirmed to be Guatemalan Nationals. The Guatemalan Consulate has been notified and is attempting to contact the next of kin.
