Border Fence Jumper News Raises Concerns

An article in the Arizona Daily Star, “Border Fence Jumpers Breaking Bones,” became the subject of mockery for the online conservative website Breitbart.com last week and concern for radio show host James T. Harris this week.

Harris, who has launched a #don’t jump campaign in response to the article reached out to popular Arizona State Representative Mark Finchem, a former first responder, to discuss the dangers and explore the possible solutions.

Finchem suggested that the United States station more personnel along the border, in an effort to avoid the hazards described in Perla Trevizo’s article.

According to the Breitbart article, Trevizo “tells the stories of several women who broke bones and were treated extensively to healthcare and surgeries at the expense of U.S. taxpayers.” In order to avoid those types of future injuries, Harris and Finchem discussed the possibility of placing warning signs on both sides of the fence.

The proposed sign reads: “PELIGRO – Climbing Hazard.” Two figures depict an illegal border crosser jumping over the fence and striking the ground. The signs would be large enough and placed far enough away from the fence so that those, who plan a running jump, can be warned of the hazards before taking their leap.
