No Surprise, Nanos New Pima County Sheriff

In today’s meeting, the Pima County Board of Supervisors voted on the successor for Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik, who will retire July 31. Chris Nanos, currently Chief Deputy of the Department, was appointed by the Board of Supervisors as the new Sheriff of Pima County, effective August 1, 2015.

In a letter to department members, Dupnik, wrote, “It has been a humbling honor and my privilege to be your Sheriff and leader, but the credit for our success is yours.”

Nanos, has waited in the wings for the past two years until Dupnik served enough time in in this term in office to avoid a special election. As part of the scheme, in May 2013, he was promoted to Chief of the Investigations Bureau and in January 2014 Sheriff Dupnik appointed Nanos as Chief Deputy.

Supervisor Richard Elias made a motion to force a public selection process, which was supported by Supervisor Ally Miller seconded. That motion failed and then Elias joined supervisors Bronson, Valadez, and Carroll in pushing through the vote for Nanos.

The Department brass was in attendance to show their support for Nanos, as deputies were out working for wages that have not increased in years.
