Former AHCCCS Chief Procurement Officer Arrested For Over $1.5 Mil Fraud

On Wednesday the Arizona Attorney General’s Office announced the arrest of Michael Veit, who served as the Chief Procurement Officer for AHCCCS, for allegedly stealing over $1.5 million. The investigation by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office began immediately after the AHCCCS Office of the Inspector General internal investigation developed information regarding alleged improper business practices of Veit.

The Arizona Republic has identified the second person as Michael Cameron.

Cameron, who is not a government employee and Veit for AHCCCS were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, fraud, taking the identity of another, money laundering and trafficking in stolen property.

On September 2nd, 2015, special agents of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office executed search warrants at four different locations in Maricopa County in conjunction with an ongoing investigation by their Health Care Fraud Special Investigation Section. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted with the execution of the search warrants at one location.

The investigation by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office began immediately after the AHCCCS Office of the Inspector General internal investigation developed information regarding alleged improper business practices of a senior level AHCCCS employee.

“I’m very proud of the special agents and prosecutors in our Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Section, who have worked around the clock to investigate these allegations,” said Attorney General Mark Brnovich. “Allegations of this type of fraud are especially alarming and the Attorney General’s Office will move swiftly in the prosecution of individuals who violate the public’s trust.”
