Part 1 The Establishment – Who Are You?

We’ve heard a lot of talk about the “establishment” in recently and it is never good.

For those who belong to the Republican Party, the “establishment” means a bunch of always wealthy and powerful males in and out of elected office. The “establishment” is really much more than that but let’s start off with this initial definition.

With that obvious definition in mind; we are forced to ask some simple questions:

  • Why don’t they seem to see what is happening in this primary cycle?
  • Why don’t they understand that what is happening – you know – the rise of Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders; all that is not “establishment?”
  • Do they understand that their behavior has left us doubting anything they say?
  • Have they stopped to think of what they did (or did not do), and if what they did or do actually does what we want and need?
  • Why does it seem that they can’t or won’t hear us and see what is happening? Why can’t they see us walking away from them?
  • They say that they are just doing what is best for our Country and that we must accept the fact that they know what is best.

They want us to believe that “outsiders” – us – are gaining a foothold within the Party, and that we are dangerous and could bring ruin on us all by risking a loss in this upcoming election. They insist that we reflect on what mainstream America wants – as if we are not part of the mainstream

They want us to do what they say works even though it clearly is not working for us. They want us to believe:

  • They know what works, or;
  • They know how to get things done and we just need to be patient, or;
  • We are simply too simple to understand that they have done and are doing

They say to those who believe they stand on principle that it is impossible to stand on principle if you want to accomplish anything.

The powers-that-be tell us that despite controlling the House and the Senate, it is impossible to take on the powers-that-be. Give us the White House and we will make it happen. Believe us this time and we won’t let you down.

Perhaps some of the explanations above are valid, but WE are so tired of the game and so suspect of the players, who do not appear interested in the good of the people and our nation. So, many loyal Republicans have concluded that the “establishment” is there only to keep themselves in power and maintain the status quo.

Sure, they’d probably like to have change, but only as long as it doesn’t threaten their own power and status. At the same time, we sacrifice everything we have to bring about meaningful change and restore our country. At this point most Republicans just want leaders that will do what they said they would do even if they fail. Better to try and fail than to talk big do nothing.

Those of us in mainstream America do it every day. We know that there is no shame is failing – there is only shame in failing to try.

In fairness, some of us are we part of the problem as well. Most of us look to our elected leaders when we talk of the “establishment” as if they were the only members of the elite.

The fundamental problem with blaming the establishment is that the definition of establishment is faulty. The problem is that many of us are a part of the Establishment and don’t even know it.

It’s not just that we vote our representatives into power and let them keep it. Many of us complain about Congress and point fingers at them when things don’t go our way, but we don’t mind the “establishment” when they are doing things that benefits us.

We are fine when they giving us money for our pet projects or protect our special interests. It’s ok to steal from others when we get the “stuff.” It only seems wrong when we have to pay for the other guy’s stuff. Yes, it is true, many benefit from the “Establishment” and the status quo to the detriment of others, including the next generation (our children). Subconsciously or consciously, many are ok with the way things are as long as we get more than we give. Oh, the “establishment” is much bigger than we all like to acknowledge and many of us who criticize “them” are card holding members.

Let’s define the establishment then. My definition of the establishment is: Anyone (elected officers at all levels and private citizens) who is happy with or benefits from the status quo and the power structure as is now constituted in this country or within their Party more than they value Freedom and the Proper Limited Role of Government.

  1. I’m grateful people are reading the article and thinking about it. We are in dire times, our time, and we need to stand up and be the best stewards we can of what we have.

    • What I don’t understand is what happened in Indiana and every other state who had primaries for its representatives and senators at the same time as the presidential primary. The voters went significantly for Trump but elected incumbents and establishment supported (McConnell and Boehner) candidates. If there is such an outrage at the the presidential level you would think that would transfer down-ballot.

  3. To paraphrase C.S. Lewis; on that final face to face it is either to GOD we say your will be done, or GOD says to you, your will be done. It does not come down to whether or not you believe in GOD. If there is no god then there is not a problem, but if there is—-. What are you willing to bet?

  4. Starting at the local level I offer up Bruce Ash, Ray Carroll, Emil Franzi, Buckmaster, the hierarchy in the local GOP right down to many PC’s. Get ’em out of here if anything is going to change. The GOPe has been bought & paid for by McCain, McSally, and the big $$$ from DC. The way to begin is Miller, Marla Closen, and Kim Demarco for Supervisors. Marla Closen is running against Steve Christie, a hand picked candidate by the establishment, supported by big money to keep a Ray Carroll clone in office. Nothing will change if he is elected. Get out and work in the primary. That’s where changes can be made. Let’s make Pima County great again and get it out of the bottom poorest areas in the country.

  5. Unfortunately we do need a definition of what is right and wrong and why we believe it. Right will always be right not because we say it is but because GOD says it is. The original argument was that we do not need GOD. That was the first lie. The Truth shall indeed set you free.

  6. This is a really good conversation. The problem is homeostatis..the tendency to keep everything in its current balance. Be careful about bringing god or religion into the mix. That is when we get distracted from the issue. We don’t need religion to tell us the problems or the solutions. We just need to be brave enough to create a “do over”. When the game is disrupted by outside forces, it is time to start over. The citizens are starting to feel their collective power which explains the rise of trump and sanders. We just need to stay true to what know to be true and have the courage to move forward. We all know the right things that need to happen. Care for our people first. Don’t let fox or cnn define what is important. Stay true to what you KNOW, not what a preacher or tv tells you. We need to start over.

  7. Every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. He came to testify of the Truth. The truth has been under attack for a long time. The lies are now accepted as truth.

  8. the problem is ‘doesn’t anyone see what time it is’ – ‘doesn’t anyone see what is happening’? that answer is few – the rest are to self absorbed to notice or is the word care – drugs, sex, rock’n roll has become the sorcery – of self indulgence of the moment – self definition has become the right of passage into the bathroom or the safe zone – abortion has become a normal means of expression of control of ‘what am I to do right now’ for “I’M” in control – and it and I are all that matters… isn’t that the definition of political correctness? Don’t correct me if I’m wrong, because that doesn’t happen.. I know just ask me. It’s where the nation has fallen – it’s where they have left God behind. When the nation left God behind, he allowed it, we are seeing what the direction that course has taken us now. Just an open expression of humanness has become open pornography – and don’t you dare speak against this in any of it’s manifestations or you are cast as bigot hater of what has become normal free will. The nation has been warned – the time is of the end of the age. Those not paying attention – not a good set of events pending – soon they will strike out at the Christians – don’t tell us! Your the problem, not the solution – You already see this – after the coronation it will get much worse. God Bless America – God Bless Israel. Both will be under severe stress soon.. as will their peoples. Keep the lamp full of oil – for the day and time is approaching soon.

    Good definition. Now, apply it honestly. All that I’m going to ask.
