ABOR To Review University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine

The Arizona Board of Regents Health Affairs Committee will hold the first of two comprehensive meetings on Aug. 5 regarding the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine to review operations of the colleges and take comments from members of the medical community and the public. The meetings will be live-streamed.

ABOR’s Health Affairs Committee will address a range of topics during the extensive fact-finding review of both colleges. Items to be discussed at the Phoenix meeting include: progress made in the delivery of public medical education, research and clinical excellence; implementation of the Banner Health affiliation agreement; an update on the accreditation process at the Phoenix college; an organizational structure review; filling leadership vacancies in Phoenix; and recognizing the contributions of the colleges to healthcare in Arizona.

Regents will also hear input from members of the medical community regarding their expectations of the colleges. A separate agenda for the Tucson meeting will be posted to the ABOR website next week. At a recent special board meeting convened in June to address concerns raised by members of the community regarding the UA College of Medicine Phoenix, the board announced it would schedule these committee meetings to continue fact-finding regarding the colleges’ operations and leadership. As the governing board, the regents work to position Arizona’s public universities for long-term competitiveness and success. These meetings regarding the UA Colleges of Medicine are intended to result in a comprehensive review and the development of a plan to respond to needs and concerns. A second meeting will be held on Aug. 12 in Tucson at the University of Arizona Vine Avenue Annex Building that will focus on the UA College of Medicine Tucson and the implementation of the Banner Health affiliation agreement. Members of the public who wish to comment may do so during a call to the audience during both the Phoenix and Tucson meetings.
