At the indicated date and time, an off-duty deputy was driving in his personal vehicle near the Copper Country Bar and Steak House on Lindahl in Bagdad. While driving by, he saw a female being assaulted by 3 other women in the parking lot. The victim was lying on the ground and appeared pinned under a vehicle while be attacked by the suspects.

The deputy exited his vehicle, identified himself as a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Deputy, and attempted to protect the victim from further attack. Several men were standing around watching the assault. As the deputy attempted to restrain suspects,

Chavez refused a lawful order to move and give room to the deputy who was attempting to intervene. The deputy noted that Chavez told him he did not care about the police officer status. When the deputy attempted to move Chavez away, Chavez reacted by pushing the deputy in the chest and continued refusing to leave. This distraction took the deputy’s attention away from the female victim who was being assaulted.

Chavez was detained by assisting deputies and then released due to emergency calls regarding persons who had just fled the bar’s parking lot and now involved in an assault at a nearby residence.

Chavez was located on July 2, 2017, and booked at the Camp Verde Detention for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer. He has since been released on a $5000 bond.
