Deputy Identified In Goodyear Shooting

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has identified Deputy Jason Blair as the officer, who fired his duty weapon in self-defense, killing 42 year old Pedro Rubio.

Blair, while on a lunch break was visiting a restaurant in the shopping complex located at the southwest corner of Dysart Road and McDowell. While driving through the parking lot, 42-year-old Pedro Rubio collided with the rear of Deputy Blair’s patrol vehicle.

Deputy Blair went to check on Mr. Rubio, when Rubio exited his car with a knife. Mr. Rubio failed to respond to Deputy Blair’s commands and began walking toward Deputy Blair who claimed he fired his duty weapon in self-defense. Deputy Blair was not injured during this incident. Mr. Rubio died at the hospital as result of his injuries.

Deputy Blair did not activate his body worn camera prior to the shooting. There were multiple civilian witnesses to the incident.

Deputy Blair’s actions are under routine review by MCSO Professional Standard Bureau (PSB). Per MCSO standard operating procedures, he has been placed on paid administrative leave. Deputy Blair joined MCSO in 2004.
