Alcohol May Have Been Factor In Fatal Sierra Vista Motorcycle Collision

Sierra Vista Police Department officers responded to a report of a single vehicle motorcycle accident in the area of South Coronado Drive and Sunburst Drive about 12:41 a.m. on July 1. The officers saw a motorcycle lying in a field on the east side of Coronado Drive.

It appeared that the driver had lost control of the motorcycle while traveling northbound on Coronado Drive near a curve in the roadway, hitting a tree before coming to a stop in the field.

The driver was later identified as 62-year-old Sierra Vista resident Anthony Mathhues, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The autopsy report from the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner stated Mathhues died of blunt trauma from a collision, and the blood analysis report indicated a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.15, as well as the presence of marijuana.

“Calls like this are just heartbreaking,” says Cpl. Tim Wachtel, SVPD public information officer, “because they are so preventable. We urge citizens to never drive while impaired. Please get a designated driver or arrange for another means of transportation to ensure you make it to your destination safely.”
