On Thursday, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors appointed a new constable, Mahogany Cherry Kennedy, for the South Mountain Justice Precinct. After the vote, Kennedy told the supervisors that she was “ready to get to work.”
The constable’s position opened up after the resignation of the previous constable, Jimmie Munoz.
“I’m glad that I was able to nominate a highly qualified person to the position,” said Supervisor Steve Gallardo, District 5. “A constable’s duties can be difficult at times, but I am confident in my discussions with Ms. Kennedy, she will be able to perform those duties with wisdom and compassion.”
In Maricopa County, constables are responsible for serving official documents including eviction notices and orders of protection. Constables are typically elected by voters, but the Board of Supervisors has the authority to appoint a constable in the event of an unexpected vacancy.
Kennedy worked with at-risk youth as part of the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections and Maricopa County Regional School District 509. She most recently served as a case manager for Chicanos Por La Causa where she was involved with the Arizona @ Work program, a partnership with Maricopa County.
“I was born and raised in this precinct,” said Kennedy. “I look forward to serving and connecting with all members of my community.”
