The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating a fatal vehicle collision that occurred early this morning on Tucson’s west side.

On August 26, 2017, just after 2:00 a.m., officers from Operations Division West and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to a report of a serious injury collision south of N. Greasewood Road and W. Speedway Boulevard that resulted in the death of Juan Baez Hernandez. The 28-year-old Hernandez was the driver of the Acura. Next of kin has been notified.

Upon arrival, they located a gray 2008 Acura TL and a gray 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche that appeared to have been involved in a head-on collision. An adult male driver was located in the Acura. That driver was sadly pronounced deceased on scene. An adult female driver and an adult female passenger occupied the other vehicle involved. The female passenger had serious injuries and was transported to a local area hospital. The driver was uninjured.

Detectives with the Tucson Police Traffic Unit responded to continue the investigation. They were able to determine that the Acura was traveling southbound on Greasewood, when the driver crossed over the yellow centerline and entered the northbound lanes of traffic. The Acura collided head-on with the Chevrolet Avalanche that was traveling northbound. It appears the Acura was traveling at a high rate of speed. No citations were issued to the driver of the Avalanche.
