Whetstone Man Assaults Mother, Barricades Himself With Machette

On Friday September 1, 2017 at approximately 10:12 am, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a domestic violence situation at a residence inthe 2000 block of Firehouse Lane in Whetstone.

The initial information indicated that 39 year old Anthony Vandersommen had assaulted his mother and held her at knifepoint before she was able to flee the home in search of help.

Sheriff’s Deputies and medical personnel responded to the scene and Deputies attempted to make contact with Anthony as medics took his mother to the fire department for evaluation of her injuries. The mother was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.

Deputies advised that Anthony barricaded himself in the garage and was reportedly armed with a machette. Sheriff’s Office SWAT team personnel responded and began negotiating with Anthony to come out of the garage.

Anthony Vandersommen was arrested and booked into the Cochise County Jail on charges of Domestic Violence – Aggravated Assault/Disorderly Conduct/and Preventing the Use of a Phone, Attempted Second Degree Murder, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Resisting Arrest.

Vandersommen remains in the Cochise County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
