Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Tucson and Willcox stations arrested eight people in connection with two human smuggling attempts at separate immigration checkpoints during the weekend.
Agents working at the immigration checkpoint on Highway 86, near Three Points, referred driver of a 2006 Nissan Maxima for a secondary inspection Saturday evening. After a canine alerted to an odor it was trained to detect, agents opened the vehicle’s trunk and discovered two adult Guatemalan men.
In another incident Sunday afternoon, Willcox Station agents working at the immigration checkpoint on Highway 90 near Huachuca City arrested two U.S. citizens, a 49-year-old man and a 47 year-old woman, after finding they were transporting three male Mexican nationals in the trunk of a Ford Taurus. The men, ages 18, 34 and 38, were illegally present in the country.
The three U.S. citizens suspected of smuggling were arrested and both vehicles were seized. The undocumented immigrants are being processed for immigration violations.
