TUSD Board Approves $200K 2 Year Contract For Trujillo

On Tuesday, the Tucson Unified School District governing board voted 4 – 1 on a 2 year, $200,000 contract with Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo.

The terms of the contract include:

In addition to and separate from such holidays, the Superintendent shall receive 28 days of paid vacation.

Superintendent shall be permitted to carry forward from one fiscal year to the next no more than 15 days of unused vacation.

The superintendent may request in writing to be compensated at his then daily rate of pay for up 20 accrued and unused vacation days.

The superintendent shall receive 8 days of illness leave per fiscal year, 4 days of which can be used by the Superintendent as personal leave.

In recognition that the superintendent will incur non-reimbursable travel and business expenses while performing his job duties and civic responsibilities, the district shall pay to the superintendent, in addition to the annual salary and other compensation set forth above, the annual sum of $20,000 in equal amounts on regular district paydays. This amount shall be prorated during the first fiscal year of this contract. This monthly payment is intended to cover the Superintendent’s costs for the superintendent’s automobile transportation, his civic responsibilities, and any technology he may need.

The district shall pay Superintendent’s annual membership fees or dues of the Superintendent in the Arizona Association of School Administrators, the American Association of School Administrators, the Urban Superintendents of America, the Arizona Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents, and additional professional organizations the Superintendent deems appropriate in the performance of his duties, subject to board approval.

Each fiscal year during the term of this contract, the district shall set aside $5,000 as contingent performance pay monies.

Trujillo should have held out for a family four pack of tickets from world view as another perk.
I wonder how long it’ll be before TUSD will need voters to approve another budget override to cover this?
Holy cow for that kind of money we could have hired the best, instead we put lipstick on a pig and sold ourselves a retread while claiming it’s a new set of tires.
I’ve felt from the beginning that the Trujillo selection was a real rush job to appoint someone, anyone quickly.

  2. Well, well, kids. And you expect something different from this man. Mexican studies are returning and will be supervised by the Grijalva machine. What could go wrong. The district wants an override vote to take care of “stuff” that should have been taken care of a long time ago. Change? There is none. What a waste for a district. Pathetic.

Sanchez version 2. Wonder what the Grijalvas promised him….maybe a house in CA right next door to HT’s. I was so hopeful the new board would make changes but not to be. I hope the charter school community uses this as an opportunity to recruit students from TUSD.

  4. Just got the tax bill and the highest portion goes to TUSD. If they did what they are supposed to I wouldn’t have any complaints. If I still had school age children I would have to set aside more money so they could get a proper education.

  5. The definition of insanity is doing the something over and over again and expecting different results. This proves the TUSD school board is insane. Time for a recall.

  6. I’m tired of funding these insane people, time to vote voucher.

Thank you Micheal Hicks for your sterling leadership and insight.

I hope the RUMOR that you are going to run for the city council is not true although that would get you away from abusing the children of TUSD by denying them a quality education.

It’s a scary thought that you might move to the city council meeting on Tuesday night.

And now let’s see what goals and metrics Trujillo is measured by. If it doesn’t include academics, classroom spending, enrollment, and discipline figures set by the BOARD, then once again we have another TUSD sham. And NO self evaluations! What a disaster by the prior board and HT Sanchez.

  9. Just think of what a 50% reduction to his pay would pay for IN tusd! But no the worker bees get a few cents and are told to be happy, they have a job, but the high price help gets everything on gold platters and still is not happy. instead of mex studies how about CIVICs classes instead. You know how the country state was founded, the politics of same and then the requirements to be a knowledgeable voter? But that would mean they would lose the VICTIM and LOSER mindset would it not?

  10. Would someone please correct me if I`m mistaken but I think I heard TUSD Board Chair. Hicks say on Wakeup Tucson this morning that the Board also approved a new contract with the company that handles recruitment and hiring of substitute teachers for TUSD, that would be the same company that made illegal political contributions to Board candidates in the last TUSD election, right? Isn`t such contract award a violation of procurement policies which require the awarding of contracts only to “responsible” contractors, Chairman Hicks and you other Board members?

Yes. Same ESI PHX company that made contributions to Cam and Kristel who illegally accepted this kickback. Pay to play scheme. They both denied knowing that fact. And the executive whose wife wrote the check responded through his corporate attorney. Gee. I wonder why? He surely knew his wife wrote the two $5,000 checks. Not sure about the contract renewal? BTW. No one knows if Cam has ever returned the $$$? What a crook! Anybody else know more?

Is that $200,000 total for two years or $200,000 per year and a 2 year contract? Either way, that is much less than the previous annual contract with Dr. Sanchez.

  12. 4-1 Who voted Nay ?
A bargain from 2.5X the previous price.
