Tanque Verde Bus Driver Passes Out Strikes, Kills Woman

On September 27, 2017, shortly before 4:00 p.m., Tucson Police officers and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to a report of a serious injury collision involving a pedestrian and a school bus in the 7200 block of E. Speedway Blvd. Upon arrival, they located an adult female pedestrian with obvious signs of trauma.

Paramedics immediately rendered aid but the female was pronounced deceased on scene. Her identity is being withheld, pending next of kin notification. The adult male driver and one teenage student on the bus were not injured.

Detectives were able to determine the driver of a 2000 Blue Bird Tanque Verde Unified School District bus was traveling westbound on Speedway Blvd. in the curb lane from N. Prudence Rd. The female pedestrian was in a motorized scooter on the northern sidewalk of E. Speedway Blvd. The driver of the bus passed out for an unknown reason and veered onto the northern sidewalk, striking several trees and poles before striking the female in the 7200 block of E. Speedway Blvd.

Neither speed nor drug or alcohol impairment appear to be factors in this collision. The investigation is ongoing and no citations have been issued at this time.
