Tucson Hit And Run Results In Pedestrian Fatality – Updated

On October 2, 2017, at 8:10 p.m., Tucson Police officers and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to a serious injury hit and run collision involving a pedestrian on N. Campbell Ave. and E. Mitchell St.  Fire Department Paramedics were first on scene and immediately began rendering aid to the adult male pedestrian. He was immediately transported to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries but later succumbed to those injuries at the hospital and was pronounced deceased. His identity is being withheld, pending next of kin notification. The pedestrian has been identified as 70-year-old Mario Cortes. Next of kin have been notified

Detectives determined the pedestrian was on the southwest quadrant of N. Campbell Ave. and E. Mitchell St. and was crossing eastbound across Campbell Ave. As he crossed at the unmarked crosswalk he was struck by a dark vehicle that was northbound on Campbell Ave.

The driver of the vehicle fled northbound on Campbell Ave. and remains outstanding. The vehicle should have front-end damage. The investigation is ongoing and detectives are urging anyone with information to please call 88-CRIME (you can remain anonymous).
