The Sierra Vista Police Department arrested a local man, 24-year-old Quatavius Crudup, for kidnapping, aggravated assault, and felony fleeing after officers responded to reports of gunshots fired in the north parking lot of Canyon Vista Medical Center early this afternoon.
At about 12:40 p.m., multiple people called 911 reporting that a black man had fired a handgun and forced a black woman into a car. As officers arrived on scene, the suspect, later identified as Crudup, drove onto Highway 90 heading eastbound. Officers pursued Crudup to the area of Highway 90 and South Misty Ray Road, where Crudup pulled over and was taken into custody without further incident.
Through interviews with witnesses and a review of video footage, SVPD detectives confirmed that Crudup came to the north parking lot of the hospital armed with a handgun and took a woman hostage. Crudup fired the handgun twice during a physical confrontation with the hostage, although no one was injured.
A bystander walking nearby pulled his own handgun out and pointed it at the suspect, ordering Crudup to release the hostage. Crudup briefly pointed his gun at the bystander before dragging the hostage toward a nearby car with the gun pointed at her head. He then forced the hostage into the vehicle with him and fled the scene.
Crudup has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault, one count of kidnapping, and one count of felony fleeing. He is currently being held in Cochise County Jail.
Highway 90 was closed near South Misty Ray Road for about 30 minutes.
