Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Nogales Station arrested a previously-deported Mexican man Saturday evening and later discovered he was convicted and incarcerated for raping a child in Washington state in 2016.

Agents patrolling east of Nogales arrested 33-year-old Rene Maldonado-Alvarado for being illegally present in the United States. During processing, agents conducted a records check on Maldonado which revealed he was convicted in Adams County, Washington, for “Rape of a Child in the Third Degree” and sentenced to one year in prison.

Maldonado will remain in federal custody pending prosecution for criminal immigration violations involving re-entry of an aggravated felon.

All persons apprehended by the Border Patrol undergo criminal history checks using biometrics to ensure illegal immigrants with criminal histories are positively identified.
