Americans for Tax Reform Call Out Lesko On Tax Increase

As the CD8 race heats up, Americans for Tax Reform has confirmed that candidate Debbie Lesko broke the promise she made to her constituents, when she signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge to oppose any and all tax increases, then voted for the largest tax increase in Arizona history.

“Politicians often run for office saying they won’t raise taxes, but then quickly turn their backs on the taxpayer. The idea of the Pledge is simple enough: Make them put their no-new-taxes rhetoric in writing. By signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, candidates and incumbents make a written commitment to oppose any and all tax increases,” wrote the organization this week.

While fellow CD8 front runner, Steve Montenegro, signed the Arizona Taxpayer Protection Pledge kept his word, according to the organization, Lesko broke hers.

“With her vote in support of Jan Brewer’s Sales Tax Hike, she did violate her pledge to Arizona Taxpayers,” said Adam Radman with Americans for Tax Reform.

Montenegro and Lesko are currently leading the polls for the Republican nomination in CD8, with both campaigning as conservatives. “Debbie Lesko caved to liberal pressures and tried to get Arizona out of its financial hole by raising taxes on Arizona seniors and families. Conservatives know that you cannot tax your way to prosperity. We need to cut spending and grow our way out of our deficit,” said a spokesperson for Montenegro’s campaign.
