Tucson Man Killed By Girlfriend’s Brother, Left Dead In Street

Tucson Police have made an arrest in connection with the murder of 29-year-old Mark Garity.

Early Tuesday morning February 27, 2018, just after 2:30 a.m., Tucson Police officers from responded to a report of a “man down” in the roadway on E. Monte Vista Dr. near N. Flanwill Blvd.

Upon arrival, they located an Mr. Garity with obvious head trauma from an unknown cause. The officers began rendering aid and summoned paramedics. Members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene and continued treatment. Sadly, he was pronounced deceased on scene.

Tucson Police detectives responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They learned Mr. Garity lived in area and was last seen earlier that morning.

As detectives continued their investigation, they were able to determine that Mr. Garity, was last seen with his girlfriend’s brother, 21-year-old Vincent Detwiler and a male friend of Vincent’s.

Vincent and his friend were in town visiting from California and were driving around in a vehicle with Mark on the night of the murder. Detectives attempted to locate Vincent and his friend here in Tucson, but were unsuccessful.

Information was quickly gathered that led detectives to believe Vincent and his friend had returned to the San Bernardino, California area.

Tucson Police contacted the San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD) and shared the information about the Tucson murder. The SBPD collaborated with our agency and began looking for Vincent Detwiler.

On February 28, 2018, SBPD located and detained Vincent inside of a vehicle.

Tucson Police detectives traveled to San Bernardino where they obtained a search warrant for the vehicle Vincent had been utilizing.

After searching the vehicle and collecting evidence, it was apparent that the murder had taken place inside of that vehicle. Tucson Police detectives then spoke with Vincent, who admitted his involvement in the murder.

An arrest warrant was obtained and Vincent Detwiler was booked into the San Bernardino County Jail on one count of Second Degree Murder. He is now awaiting extradition back to Arizona.

Detectives have identified the other male that was with Mark and Vincent on the night of the murder. That individual has not been arrested. Detectives are continuing their investigation and additional details will be released as they become available.
