The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating a fatal drive-by shooting that occurred yesterday on Tucson’s East Side. On April 6, 2018, at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers from Operations Division East responded to a residence in the 8100 block of East 20th Street for reports of a drive-by shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located three adult males in front of the residence. Two of the males were bleeding heavily from obvious signs of gunshot trauma. The third male was not injured. Officers immediately began rendering first aid until it was safe for Tucson Fire personnel to move into the scene. Tucson Fire then took over medical treatment and transported the victims to a local area hospital. Shortly after arrival, one of the victims succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. He was identified as 51-year-old Jesus Castro. Next of kin has been notified.

The second victim, Castro’s son, sustained serious injuries and is currently in stable condition at the hospital.  The Tucson Police Gang Unit responded to continue the investigation. Detectives were able to determine that Castro was sitting in his truck on E. 20th Street, speaking to his two sons that were standing in the front yard.

During their conversation, a vehicle pulled up next to Castro’s truck. Occupants inside of the vehicle opened fire on Castro and his sons with what appeared to be an assault rifle and a handgun. The vehicle then sped away from the scene. Based on information gathered, it appears the shooting was not random and that the suspects were specifically targeting the victims.

Although the Tucson Police Gang Unit is investigating this incident, it does not appear to be gang related. The Gang Unit is responsible for investigating all drive-by related shootings.

There are no suspects in custody at this time. Detectives are currently following up on leads and are asking anyone with information to call 88-CRIME. You CAN remain anonymous.
