Wanted Man Evades Surprise Police

On April 9, 2018 just after 3:20 p.m., Surprise Police officers attempted to contact 51 year-old Lonnie Smith, who was wanted on a felony warrant for property and drug crimes. Smith was also believed to have been involved in additional property related crimes in Surprise. Officers attempted to contact the Lonnie Smith in the parking lot of a business near Grand Avenue and Town Center Drive.

According to Surprise Police, during the contact, the Smith displayed a firearm leading to one of the officers discharging his firearm at Smith. Lonnie Smith then fled on foot with officers in chase. After a short foot pursuit, Smith confronted a bystander, stole their vehicle, and fled the scene. The stolen vehicle that Smith fled the scene in was a 2011 Grey in color Toyota Sienna minivan with Arizona license plate BWS-2977.

It is uncertain whether Smith was injured or not. No one, with the possible exception of Lonnie Smith, was injured during this incident.

Police advise that Smith is believed to be armed and dangerous, and if you see him, do not attempt to confront him; instead, call 911.
