McCain Family Tweets, Memoir Spark Speculation

The only public views of Sen. John McCain were shared on Twitter by daughter, Meghan McCain.

A series of tweets from family members raised new doubts as to Senator John McCain’s  health. However, recently released excerpts from Sen. John McCain’s new book, The Restless Wave, leave little doubt that even in the face of death he remains unchanged.

This weekend, Sen. John McCain’s son-in-law Ben Domenech sent out and then deleted a tweet that appeared to indicate the end is near:

@bdomenech

“John hugged me tonight. He asked me to take care of Meghan. I said I would,” Domenech wrote. “F–k you soulless crazies. F–k you all the way to hell.”

God bless to you and Meghan and the McCain family. Remember the vast majority of the American people support all of you. Don’t listen to the crazies. They’re just crazy.

Then on Monday, Sen. John McCain’s daughter Meghan retweeted a tweet from NBC news correspondent Kasie Hunt, who quoted a positive line from The Restless Wave:

““The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it,” spoke my hero, Robert Jordan, in For Whom the Bell Tolls. And I do, too. I hate to leave it. But I don’t have a complaint. Not one. It’s been quite a ride.” https://t.co/fZoQGlr9Iw

McCain who is battling a deadly form of brain cancer, was visited by Joe Biden according to a tweet from Cindy McCain.

On Monday, Apple News released excerpts from the ailing senator’s book which reveal that even as he is dying, McCain holds on to his contempt for his fellow Republicans including President Donald Trump:

“He has declined to distinguish the actions of our government from the crimes of despotic ones. The appearance of toughness, or a reality show facsimile of toughness, seems to matter more than any of our values.”

“There is a scarcity of humility in politics these days. I suspect it’s never been in abundant supply in most human enterprises. And I don’t mean modesty. Any politician worth a damn can fake modesty. Humility is the self-knowledge that you possess as much inherent dignity as anyone else, and not one bit more. Among its other virtues, humility makes for more productive politics. If it vanishes entirely, we will tear our society apart.”

“In the course of a long career, I’ve seen a decline in civility and cooperation, and increased obstructionism. But there are still enough statesmen in Congress and the executive branch committed to meeting the challenges of the hour, and putting the country they’re honored to serve before narrower interests. They might not be the most colorful politicians in town, but they’re usually the ones who get the most done.”
