TPD Investigates Pedestrian Fatality In Parking Lot

The Tucson Police Department is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred on Tucson's South Side.

On Saturday May 5, 2018, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Tucson Police officers and members of the Tucson Fire Department responded to 4415 S. 6th Avenue for a report of a serious injury collision. Upon arrival, first responders were directed to an injured male in the parking lot. Tucson Fire attempted to render aid to the victim; however, he was sadly pronounced deceased on scene. The victim was identified as 61-year-old Manuel Castro Leon. Next of kin have been notified.

Detectives determined Mr. Leon was waiting in the parking lot of the business while his vehicle was being serviced. At the same time, an employee of the business was sitting in a large (lifted) pickup truck talking on the phone. After finishing his phone call, the driver began pulling out of the lot and ran over Mr. Leon. The driver continued down the road and then immediately returned after employees called to advise him of the collision. The driver cooperated with the investigation and told detectives that he didn’t know he hit anyone.

There were no indications that the driver was impaired at the time of the collision and speed does not appear to be a factor. It is uncertain if Mr. Leon was sitting or standing in the parking lot when he was struck. No citations or arrests have been issued at this time.
