Tucson Teen Killed Crouching In Middle Of Speedway

The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating the death of 16-year-old Juwan A. Dennis which occurred on Thursday night on Tucson’s East Side.

On July 26, 2018, just before 9:00 p.m., Tucson Police officers and members of the Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to a serious injury collision near E. Speedway Blvd. and N. Ave Ricardo Small. Upon arrival, they located Dennis in the roadway with obvious signs of trauma. Shortly after arriving on scene, Dennis was pronounced deceased.

Detectives were able to determine that Dennis was standing in the middle of westbound Speedway, when a vehicle narrowly missed colliding with him. The driver pulled over and began yelling for him to get out of the road. Dennis was then seen crouching down in the roadway as a second vehicle approached. The driver of that vehicle did not see Dennis until the last minute and was unable to stop in time. The vehicle struck Dennis in the roadway and the driver immediately pulled over. Responding officers and detectives interviewed the driver at the scene of the collision.

It is unknown why Dennis was in the roadway. The driver of the vehicle involved displayed no signs of impairment and speed does not appear to be a factor.

This is an on-going investigation and no charges or citations have been issued at this time.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call 88-CRIME.
