Woman Killed Crossing Midtown Tucson Street

The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating a pedestrian collision that took the life of 68-year-old Margot Kellum on Monday evening in Midtown Tucson.

On August 6, 2018, just before 9:00 p.m., Tucson Police officers and members of the Tucson Fire Department responded to the intersection of East Speedway and North Richey for a report of a serious injury collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, first responders located Ms. Kellum in the roadway being treated by motorists who stopped to assist. Tucson Fire personnel took over medical treatment and transported Ms. Kellum to Banner University Medical Center. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Ms. Kellum passed away from her injuries.

Detectives were able to determine that the vehicle involved, a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, was traveling eastbound on Speedway in the curb lane. A short Monsoon rainstorm had just begun to fall and as the vehicle approached North Richey, it collided with Ms. Kellum, who was southbound in the crosswalk. The driver did not see Ms. Kellum until the last minute and was unable to stop in time. The driver involved remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Based on statements from the driver and witnesses, as well as roadway evidence, it does not appear that speed was a contributing factor in the collision. It is uncertain at this time if impairment was a factor. This is an ongoing investigation and no charges or citations have been issued. Anyone with additional information is asked to call 88-CRIME.
