A University of Arizona student, 20-year-old Erin Jones, was fatally shot at an off-campus house party over the weekend.

According to the Tucson Police Department, early Sunday morning, at approximately 1:40, the Public Safety Communications Department received several 9-1-1 calls reporting a shooting within the 3200 block of E. 5th St. Officers responded to the area and located an Ms. Jones with obvious signs of gunshot trauma outside of a residence. Officers immediately began rendering aid until personnel from the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) arrived and transported her to Banner University Medical Center (BUMC) with life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, she was pronounced deceased.

As additional officers were responding to the scene, a vehicle with an additional adult female victim was located nearby. Officers rendered aid until personnel from TFD transported her to Saint Joseph’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two additional victims, a teen female, and an adult male, arrived at BUMC and Tucson ER and Hospital by personal vehicle and were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot trauma.

Detectives believe there was a large gathering at the residence before the shooting took place, and several witnesses left the area prior to police arriving. Investigators believe that several University of Arizona students were among those attending the large gathering.

University President Robert Robbins released a statement on the sophomore’s passing on Sunday.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to Erin’s family in California and across the country, her friends, and her classmates in Tucson and Newport Beach, who are absorbing the heartbreaking news today.”

Anyone with information or who may have been present during the incident is asked to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME. You can remain anonymous.
